How to Specify a 316 Stainless Steel Delta Anchor

A Delta-style anchor is designed to set quickly in sand, mud and mixed seabeds. For marine service, alloy selection, geometry and surface finish all affect corrosion resistance, handling and holding performance. Hengke supplies custom 316 and 316L stainless steel anchor components to approved drawings and inspection requirements.

Material selection

316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, giving it better resistance to chloride exposure than common 304 stainless steel. 316L can be selected when lower carbon content is preferred for welded fabrication. The requested grade should be stated on the drawing and verified by a material certificate or positive material identification when required.

Manufacturing considerations

The shank, fluke and connecting features must be designed for the intended vessel and working conditions. Critical radii, wall transitions and welded joints should avoid stress concentration. Depending on the design, parts may be investment cast, machined and welded, followed by grinding and mirror polishing. The finished assembly should be checked for symmetry, attachment dimensions and freedom from sharp edges.

Inspection and testing

Typical quality checks include dimensional inspection, visual examination of polished surfaces, material verification and dye penetrant testing of relevant cast or welded areas. Proof-load or other mechanical testing can be arranged when the purchaser provides an applicable standard and acceptance criteria. An anchor should always be selected and used according to the vessel designer or qualified marine professional; product dimensions alone do not guarantee holding performance in every seabed or weather condition.
